The Queen
Mixed feelings
There were conflicting emotions among some Africans regarding the monarch and her country's colonial past on a continent where Britain once controlled more than half the territory as condolences flowed in from all around the world following Queen Elizabeth's passing. Some people had warm memories of Britain's longest-reigning monarch, who visited crowds in 20 different countries across the continent throughout her 70-year reign and smiled and waved.
Others, however, have kept their resentment of British colonialism alive and remembered events like the brutal suppression of Kenya's Mau Mau rebellion in the 1950s as the British Empire came to an end, as well as a massive diamond that the British royal family had taken from colonial South Africa in 1905 but which the queen refused to return despite requests.
Despite this perception of her, Elizabeth had a close friendship with late South African president Nelson Mandela, the country's first post-apartheid leader, and went there twice after white minority rule ended.
In the meanwhile, the ascension of King Charles to the throne has sparked new demands from politicians and campaigners for the former Caribbean colonies to depose the king as their head of state and for Britain to pay reparations for its involvement in the slave trade.

Long live the King
King Charles III has been proclaimed in a historic ceremony in which he swore with the help of God to dedicate βwhat remains to me of my lifeβ to βcarrying out the heavy task that has been laid upon meβ. In a ceremony dating back centuries, and to a fanfare of trumpets, the King was proclaimed at a meeting of the accession council in the ancient St James`s Palace by privy counsellors.
The principal proclamation was then read aloud by the garter king of arms from the balcony of St James`s palace to a crowd of members of the public gathered below, followed by gun salutes in Hyde Park and the Tower of London. It is the first accession council since 1952, when Queen Elizabeth II was proclaimed.
