π A Sobering Retraction
Baobab Admits Fault: The Curious Case of Zimbabwe's Alcohol Consumption
Dear Readers,
Yes, we know it's unusual for us to pop into your inbox on a Saturday, but we felt it was important to address an issue that has come to light.
We at Baobab pride ourselves on delivering accurate, balanced, and insightful news about the African continent. However, it seems that even we can occasionally stumble into a journalistic pothole.
In our recent article, "Zimbabwe: The Country With The Highest Per Capita Alcohol Consumption," we reported some eye-popping statistics that painted Zimbabwe as the world's top tippler. These numbers, sourced from WiseVoter, were attributed to the World Health Organization (WHO).
But after some digging and prodding, we've discovered that the WHO doesn't actually have these figures on their website. At least, weβve been unable to access them.
We reached out to WiseVoter, not once, but twice, politely asking them to shed some light on where they unearthed these sobering statistics. But alas, our inquiries were met with a deafening silence.
So, dear readers, we come to you with our journalistic hat in hand, asking you to kindly disregard that article.
While we thought we had done our due diligence by quoting what seemed to be a reliable source, it appears that we, too, were led astray.
We would also like to shoutout the eagle-eyed
for bringing all of this to our attention.Thank you Mary!
And see you all Mondayβ¦
Cheers,
The Baobab Team
As a former teacher of journalism I applaud you admitting to a professional oops. It happens, and when it does, prompt retraction and admission ensures credibility of the publication. Baobab News, youβre good. And hats off to Mary Moyo too.
Thank you for demonstrating your integrity. Blessings to you all! ππΎ
